August 16th Trail-Way.. Greth takes the win and regains points lead
With perfect weather forecast and perfect track conditions not even another full moon could jinx the racing action.
The pressure is obviously mounting in the chase for the coveted Hyper Cup. Leading into the nights racing Tim Mertz had a 13 point lead. After the night’s action was completed, Ryan Greth regained the lead and now enters the last 7 races left with a 7 point lead. It looks like this points chase will go down to the wire.
Greth took over the lead from Jim Campbell on lap 4 and at that point and as much as Jeremy “Jay Dog” Lynch tried to catch him, Ryan was never headed and scored his 5th win of the season. When asked more about this year’s performance, Ryan had a lot to say, “First and foremost, the Greth Racing Team would like to express the utmost gratitude to Hyper Racing for providing a fast, consistent and reliable machine to compete at the level which has become necessary with the Sidewinder Sprints. A great car was only part of the package as the SPAR Racing Engines Yamaha R1 performed flawlessly. Thanks must also go to Seroskie Designs and Fords Painting.”
Ryan is one of only 3 teams still performing “double duty” with both the Sidewinders and the 600’s and when asked about the evenings win and the differences in the two cars Greth was able to provide some insights, “Of course, it was helpful to start near the front this week, but the car was absolutely flying. My dad does an incredible job with that car week after week. He may just be the best kept secret in the pit area." Ryan continued, “The more often I race both the 600 and the Sidewinder it becomes more apparent how much more fun the Sidewinder is to race. The extra horsepower, torque and speed makes the 600 feel tame. If we could get a few more 600 drivers to realize this and commit to making the switch I think the Sidewinder Sprints will be on the road to possibly being “the” division of the future. With the reality of a very healthy portion of $500 to win shows and some different venues on the horizon for next season, the Sidewinders are becoming ever more alluring."
As a side note Ryan asked that we mentioned some startling facts that his team has experienced this year;
Greth Racing would also like to bring to the attention of any potential Sidewinder Sprints competitors, that this week at Trail-Way the #71 car had a brand new set of rear tires. This probably does not seem noteworthy to most racers but amazingly, these new tires marked only the 2nd set of tires for the team all season. Over 20 races on a set of rear tires is certainly a cost saver and it does not seem to hinder the performance of the car. This really shows the cost effectiveness of the Sidewinder Sprints over other divisions where annual tire costs are measured in multiple thousands of dollars.
The evenings “Rocky Balboa” award must go to Jimmy Puckett. The last time the Sidewinders were at Trail-Way, Jimmy had a night he would rather forget. In only his 3rd outing in his potent Ledo Pizza, Rockland Machine, J.P. Contractors Inc. sponsored Yamaha powered Probe chassis, Jimmy was forced pit side under the multiple spin out rule. What a difference 4 weeks can make. Jimmy won his heat in convincing fashion and finished the feature with a fine 4th place. When asked about the difference, Jimmy smiled and said “I had a little talk with the car earlier in the day, and the car promised to be on its best behavior”. Jimmy then followed by saying, “It takes awhile to get a handle on the extra power and just how much you need to work the throttle to keep the car under you. Coming from the 600’s where you just mash the gas pedal and steer, it’s a big difference in styles”. From the reports from the grandstand, the entire Puckett family of Rhonda, Kolton, Colin and Kendyl were as excited as Jimmy by the Rocky like performance.
One of the unluckiest cars in the last few races at Trail-Way has been Jim Campbell. Jim’s SC Signs & Designs, Speed Equipment Corp., National Van Lines, Torodyne - Batteries, Alternators and Starters sponsored Suzuki powered Probe has streaked the field to win his heat race only to be forced out early in the feature. Look for Jim to snare a win before the end of the year.

This Weeks Question;
Q. Young James Shaw has been very impressive in the last few weeks at TW. Can James hold on this week for a break through win?
A. Not this week, James struggled with a lose car early and was unfortunate to clip a spun Tim Mertz and forced to retire with a broken front axle.
Next Weeks Questions;
Q. After his break through win at Path Valley last week, can Stan Fleming join the 2008 repeat winners club this week?
