July 5th Super 600 Showdown
A long day…and night…but worth every minute …
Everyone knows Mike Rutherford is a hot shoe. At Lanco, Mike regularly wins multiple divisions every night. At the Super 600 Showdown, Mike had his first drive of a Sidewinder Sprint and performed exactly as expected. Setting fast time in qualifying by a mere .001 seconds over Tim Mertz, and with the “heads up” format, Mike streaked away to take his first ever Sidewinder Sprints win in Jason Morrison’s Mr. Dent sponsored Kawasaki powered Hyper chassis.
Shane Lewis, making his debut in the Henchcraft rental Sidewinder Sprint put in a terrific showing, timing 3rd fastest and bringing the car home with a 3rd place finish.
Tim Mertz, once again showed that he will be the man to beat with a terrific run behind “Lanco Mike” for a strong 2nd place finish.
While the top 3 cars made it look easy, the race amongst the next 8 cars on the tight confines of the high-banked 1/8th mile was where the action was. Multiple position changes kept the large crowd entertained.
The wingless 600cc / Sidewinder challenge got off to a rough start with multiple restarts as all drivers were trying to come to grips with the lids on. One driver making it look easy was USAC star Brady Bacon. Brady made a “big move” on the 2nd lap for the lead and inadvertently took out Shane Lewis and Mike Freed bringing out a caution. On the restart, Kenny Wilhide rode a wheel coming down the front straight and proceeded to tear down over 100ft of fencing. Kenny was transported to hospital and released the next day with a minor concussion and soreness.
Kudos’ must go to Jason Morrison for stepping up to promote this show in it’s hour of need and also all the Lanco members and volunteers that helped produce the best 600cc micro race in the history of $10,000 to win races.

This Weeks Question;
Can the Sidewinders beat the 600’s in the Wingless Challenge race at the Super 600 Showdown ?
A. The ill fated wingless race only lasted two laps before Kenny Wilhide bought down the front straight and turn one fencing with a huge crash, and the late hour resulted in the cancellation of the rest of the wingless challenge. (Maybe next year we can get the answer ??)
Next Weeks Question;
Q. Will the Ryan Greth / Tim Mertz show continue at Path valley this week, or will we have a different winner ?
