Not even a 2.30am feature could slow Tim Mertz.
Path Valley is overdue for some sunshine. When the teams arrived, the track was already prepared. It looked fantastic. Smooth, banked and ready for action. Then along came mother nature for the umpteenth time this year and dumped precipitation for the next 2 hours. With 91 600’s pitside as part of the PA600Speedweek, Path Valley was not about to throw in the towel without a fight.
After multiple hours of running in the track, which included the 270’s, 600’s and Sidewinders the clock was nearing midnight, but the track became “raceable”.
All classes did a great job in their heats on a narrow racing surface that was slowly widening for the features.
In the Sidewinder feature Beasley got the jump on the field at the start and managed to lead for the first 8 laps before Tim Mertz made his move for the lead. Mertz has found something lately in his setup of his RTS Chassis and was flying on the fast tacky surface.
Comments were made later in the pits regarding the 4 foot long vapor trails coming from the Sidewinder’s wings during the 2.30am feature race.
In victory lane Tim said “ A special thanks must go to Path Valley for providing an increased purse tonight for all divisions. It really takes a lot of work for tracks to prepare a good racing surface and unfortunately Path Valley has been hit with the worst weather this year but they continue to try their best to provide a fast and smooth racing surface.” On being asked about his recent speed Tim had this to say, “ We have really found something with our RTS Chassis. We are starting to see the efforts of our team of Dad, Ron and Joe being rewarded with good finishes. None of this would be possible without the support of Mertz's Moving, Allison Door Sales, Guhl Motors and RTS chassis.”
Sidewinder Sprints join the $10K to win Super 600 Showdown (www.super600showdown.com) race at Lanco on July 5th. The Sidewinders will compete in their own 20 lap winged feature event before taking the wings off to compete in the 20 lap Sidewinder / 600cc wingless challenge race.
