2008 Sidewinder  News & Updates

Sunshine last week….this week snow !

With freezing over night temperatures and morning snow, the Trail Way management team was left with only one option, to cancel the scheduled race day.

That left all teams eagerly awaiting this coming Friday night for our first 2008 appearance at Path Valley ( www.pathvalley.com ). Teams are reminded that Path Valley has pushed back the weekly starting time to 7.00pm to allow more teams the chance to travel to the track after work and compete at the high banked quarter mile facility.

Apart from Hyper Racing www.HyperRacing.com ), our thanks must go out to the other companies that have supplied products for the award winning raffle car;

The countdown continues... only 2 weeks until opening day.

Time for another installment of the recap on the 2007 teams that will be back in 2008.

# 17 Tim Mertz; Unlucky is the best way to describe Tim’s 2007 season. The Mertz team was super competitive from the start. An unfortunate engine issue forced the team to sit out many of the race dates but they came back late in the season with the same speed they exhibited at the start of the season. With the sale of their 270cc operation funding spares for the 1000cc car, and the team’s focus on the Sidewinder Sprints in 2008, Tim will definitely be one to keep an eye on as he charges to the front in his Suzuki powered RTS Chassis.

# 29 Denny Landvater; The #29 car from the Gary and Clare Funck racing stable had 3 different drivers in 2007 before Denny landed the fulltime drivers role. Despite the magnetic attraction between the two Funck cars on occasion in 2007, Denny is back for the 2008 season and the Funck team will no doubt benefit from last years experience. Denny brings many years of 600cc racing experience with him and will utilize that experience to take the Suzuki powered Hyper Chassis to the front.

# 31 Sean “ Lansdale Laser” Campbell; Sean’s 2007 season….or lack thereof, got off to a late start (May) in 2007 and then only lasted 7 races before a crash related back injury forced him to sit out the remainder of the year. He did manage to pick up 2 wins in those 7 races. 2008 could be the year to make up for lost time. The Dun/Bell Racing team has committed to running for the coveted Hyper cup in their new Suzuki powered Henchcraft Chassis.

# 37 Larney “Buzz” Johnson; Larney is another car that only made it out late in the 2007 season but expects to race at least all of the Trail-Way schedule in 2008 with the odd visit to Path Valley (Larney explained that Path Valley is a little hard to get to on Friday nights…it’s a 5 hour tow each way for him!! ) This year Larney will have Yamaha power to back up last years Kawasaki engine in his RTS chassis.

# 38 Mark Strickler; Team Strickler is looking for “big things” in 2008.  The team had 4 wins in 2007 and is looking to improve on that amount this season. Mark openly confesses to wanting to win the championship this year and if his passion for the Sidewinder Sprints can translate into victories, he will be one to reckon with each and every night.  Once again in 2008, Mark will be powered by Yamaha engines and Stallard chassis.

# 46 Gary Reed; Gary is another that joined Sidewinder Sprints late in the year to get a feel for the extra Hp and torque before the 2008 season. The later start at path Valley should help Gary make more races in the coming season Gary will once again utilize a Kawasaki powered RTS chassis.

# 55 Jason Morrison; The bridesmaid of the 2007 season ( more 2nds than anyone else) is looking for his first Sidewinder Sprints win in 2008. Jason has spent the off season fine tuning his Kawasaki powered Hyper chassis and could be a potential winner on any given night.

# 91 Jeremy “Jay Dog” Lynch; Jeremy will be looking to start the season with a repeat of the start of the 2007 season (he won on opening day). One of a handful of drivers that perform double duty ( both 600cc and 1000cc), Jay Dog is always a threat to win at Trail-Way and the 2008 season should see him visit victory lane more than once in his Yamaha powered Stallard chassis combination.

# 92 Gary Funck; In 2007 season, Team Funck was everywhere….from the start of the year car shows to the end of the year races, Gary Funck was the only car that competed in all the races in 2007 !! His commitment to the new Sidewinder Sprints led us to name an inaugural award (Got Funcked Award) to recognize his efforts in helping promote the class. Gary is again committed to the 2008 season with his two car team and will again be steering his Suzuki powered Hyper Chassis.

# 96 Jessie Snyder; Last year Kevin Gobrecht Memorial winner, will be chasing the Hyper Cup in 2008. Jessie started to get the Yamaha powered Probe dialed in late in the 2007 season and was simply dominating at the Gobrecht Memorial.  Jess will use the same combination of Yamaha power and Probe chassis in the chase for the 2008 Hyper Cup.

The countdown continues... only 3 weeks until opening day.

Time for a recap on the first seven 2007 teams that will be back in 2008.

# 1 Shawn Seifert; Last year Shawn experimented with different torsion bar setup and mainly concentrated his efforts at Trail-Way. Towards the end of the season, he started to figure out a setup that was to his liking and he managed to produce his maiden Sidewinder Sprints win at Trail-Way. This coming year, Shawn will start the season where he left off with his Kawasaki powered ZX 10 Probe chassis and will be a threat to win the championship.

# 1H Rick Hench; Known throughout the world as “Mr. Mini Sprint”, in 2007 Rick was intrigued by the Sidewinder rules package especially the stock OEM engine rules and was approached by team Hendershot to build a car for the inaugural 2007 season. (More on that below in #7) Last season Rick tried his hand at racing a Sidewinder at Path Valley and from that experience has decided to commit even more resources for the 2008 season in the chase for the coveted Hyper Cup.

# 2T Ron Taggert; Ron was a welcomed addition to last years driver’s roster. Once his injection issues were figured out, Ron became very competitive with a great 8th place run against the toughest field yet assembled at last years Kevin Gobrecht Memorial race at Trail-Way. Ron will once again be utilizing a Yamaha powered PMP in 2008.

# 3 Jim Campbell; Although Jim was registered to compete in 2007, technically, Jim could easily have been in “The new for 08” group. Jim tried valiantly to hit the track last year but unfortunately, circumstances prevented that from happening. But this year will be a different story. Jim is nearing completion of his new Suzuki powered Henchcraft chassis and is looking forward to racing his Sidewinder Sprint in 2008.

# 5  Henchcraft Rental Car: This the most unique car registered with Sidewinder Sprints to compete in 2008. Rick Hench developed an exciting rental program to allow other teams/drivers from different classes of racing to get the hands on experience of competing in a Sidewinder Sprint. Late last season Mike Pychinka and Brent Marks both took advantage of this program to experience the faster speeds and torque of the 1000cc engines. If you have watched or wondered what it would be like, now is the time to book your racing experience as race dates are limited and filling fast.

# 5G Jimmy Glenn; In limited appearances in the family owned Sidewinder Sprints, Jimmy still had an impact, successfully winning the opening race at Path Valley last year. In the last race of the year at Path Valley, Jimmy’s brother Chris gave the Sidewinder a try. The Glenn team utilize a Kawasaki powered Hyper chassis

# 7 Donnie Hendershot; A lot can be said about this team. Starting with a prototype Henchcraft Racing Sidewinder Sprint no one was really sure at the start of the year how this would work out for the experienced team. By the end of the year we all had the answer. Donnie was dominant in capturing the Season Championship. It seemed like team Hendershot owned Path Valley where he had the most wins.  Going into 2008 Donnie has spoken of perhaps only racing a limited schedule due to other commitments….but with a substantial points championship on the line, I think Donnie will make the time in an effort to claim back to back Sidewinder Sprint Championships in their Suzuki powered Henchcraft Chassis.
